Use Of Vacuum Chambers In Science

A vacuum chamber is a rigid enclosure from which air and other gases are removed by a vacuum pump. The resulting low pressure, commonly referred to as a vacuum, allows researchers to conduct physical experiments or to test mechanical devices which must operate in a vacuum. With the use of vacuum chambers that are made out of aluminum, the user can control the magnetic field that is within the chamber. For vacuum chambers where it is important that magnetic fields do not enter the chamber from external sources, the chamber is constructed of mu-metal.

Vacuum chambers are necessary to impede the contamination of samples in varied range of applications in spectroscopy and for film depositions. These types of applications are typically employed in the semi-conductor industry where avoiding contamination of specimens is of the utmost importance. As referenced previously, vacuum chambers produce an environment that is conducive to testing devices that must operate in the vacuum that exists in outer space. Numerous models of vacuum chambers are made of aluminum, due to the fact that it does not have any magnetic properties.

Vacuum chambers are frequently constructed with multiple ports, covered with flanges, to allow instruments or windows to be installed in the walls of the chamber. In applications that require only low vacuum levels, rubber seals are used. In ultra high vacuum processes, the flanges are made of hardened steel and welded into place against copper gaskets.

A type of vacuum chamber frequently used in the field of spacecraft engineering is a thermal vacuum chamber,, which provides a thermal environment representing what a spacecraft would experience in space. This type of application will also utilize a highly advanced   vacuum pump

When resins and silicon rubbers are produced, vacuum chambers and pumps are used. A vacuum chamber is needed when manufacturing resins and silicone rubber to insure that the mold is free of air bubbles. A smaller sized vacuum chamber is utilized to eliminate air bubbles from occurring in materials before they set. The material utilized for molding or casting is created according to its manufacturers instructions. Since this type of material will expand to as much as 4 times its original volume, the vacuum container must be large enough to accommodate this volume expansion. If not, there will insufficient volume to complete the process. The material container is then placed into the vacuum chamber; a vacuum pump is connected and turned on. Subsequent to the vacuum attaining 982 mbar, the substrate will commence rising. . After the material reaches its full volume it will stabilize and not rise any further. The material is maintained in the vacuum for 3 more minutes in insure that all air has been removed from it. After reaching this interval, there is no longer a need to apply a vacuum and valves are open that allow the pressure inside the chamber to equilibrate with the ambient air pressure. At this point the vacuum chamber is opened and the substrate is removed and put into a mold.

Consequently, vacuum chambers used in semi-conductor manufacturing involve processes that are very complex. Due the very high levels of air purity required to avoid contamination of semi-conductor devices, these devices must be processed in ultra pure vacuums. As semi-conductor devices have packed increasingly dense circuitry into smaller and smaller silicon real estate, the need for ever increasing vacuum levels has also risen. For this reason, the most advanced ultra high vacuum chambers and pumps are used in space research and semi-conductor manufacturing. The semi-conductor industry utilizes such densely packed circuitry that even impurities that consist of one or two molecules, can disrupt their processes.

PBS Talks Covering Presidential Races: TCA (Deadline Hollywood)

TCA: PBS Chief Paula Kerger Plays Defense Over Programming TCA: PBS Unveils
Premiere Dates, New Antiquing Competition _**Diane Haithman** is contributing
to Deadline’s TCA coverage._ What’s a liberal political activist Hollywood
producer to do when the sitting president is a Democrat and the big news is
dueling Republican hopefuls? Deadline asked producer Harry Thomason at today’s
TCA in Pasadena, which focused on PBS. “I think it is well-known that most
people in Hollywood are left-leaning,” said Thomason, who was here to
participate on a panel about the miniseries _Clinton_. “They are concerned
with getting Obama re-elected, and that means doing whatever they have to do.”
Two decades ago, Thomason and wife Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (_Designing
Women_) were Hollywood’s premiere FOBs – that is, Friends of Bill Clinton. The
producers advised Clinton on his media image and produced The Man from Hope
campaign film that was shown at the 1992 Democratic National Convention.
Thomason says of the role of Hollywood in 2012: “I really think that Hollywood
always has an effect on politics, because there is so much money here.”
Thomason declined to discuss the effect of Washington politics on public
funding for always-beleaguered PBS. But another ...
