When Buying an Extension Cord Demand Quality
Using an extension cord can make the function of a space much more convenient, and when you need to place a lamp in a certain spot for your room design it really comes in handy. An extension cord can make it convenient to plug your electrical devices into an outlet regardless of how far away it is. You will have no difficulty reaching an electrical outlet across the room. You can find longer and shorter extension cords depending on what they are designed to do, and even though most extension cords appear very similar to each other, looks can be deceiving. When you get a quality built extension cord, it will last for many years while providing extended power safely.
Extension Cords Available in a Variety of Strengths and Sizes
If you need an extension cord just to use at home for electrical lamps, radios, decorative wall clocks or small electronic items, then the regular double-wire extension cord will serve your purpose nicely. The basic double-wire extension cord comes in lengths up to one hundred feet. For appliances and electronic devices that are more powerful like power tools and space heaters, the double-wire cord is not adequate. For these larger machines a heavier capacity extension cord is needed. This is the type of cord that is frequently associated with outdoor use. They are usually brightly colored, either yellow or orange, which makes them highly visible. This high visibility is quite beneficial when you use one for yard work or when a construction professional uses one on a construction project. Since the third wire is ungrounded in a three-wire extension cord, make sure that you always plug it into a grounded outlet.
Selecting the Right Cord for the Task
If you propose to purchase an extension cord, think about what you hope to do with it. If you simply plan to plug in a lamp or a radio, then a basic, two-wire extension cord will get the job done safely and effectively. If, however, you are using it to work a power tool like a saw or a sander, then, for safety’s sake, you must use a heavy-duty extension cord. Another thing to keep in mind when you are shopping for an extension cord is that there is a huge variation in quality between extension cords. So when you are evaluating an extension cord for buying, check for a UL listing, which tells you that the cord meets or beats the United Laboratories power cord safety standards. One indication that a power cord is heavy duty is that it has substantial insulation, and insulation is particularly important if you plan to use the cord for a heavy appliance. Another nice characteristic to look for on you extension cord is the childproof block that you can use to cover any unused extension outlets. Other traits that a quality cord may have are grounded terminals, polarized plugs, a power on indicator as well as surge protection. The price point for your cord can range between several dollars for a simple cord to thirty plus dollars for a heavy-duty extension cord.
Expanding Capabilities with Power Strips
Also consider that using an extension cord is a great way to give yourself some design options as you are arranging electrical equipment in a room, it is also an effective way to add to the number of electrical outlets currently in a room. This is when, rather than a plain extension cord, you will probably wish to use a power strip. Using a power strip allows a single plug to become as many as eight outlets, and it will protect your machines from power surges at the same time. A good, power strip will set you back anywhere from ten to thirty dollars.
how do i fix a ripped power cord?
so i have a air pump with a riped power cord with some copper wire hanging out any advice for fixing?
Well.......there are a few things you can do.
1. If the rip isn't too bad, you can use some electrical tape and wrap it around the bad spot.
2. If too much of the wire is exposed or broken you can try to cut out the bad spot and "splice" the wires back together. then wrap the wires with the electrical tape making sure the exposed opposing wires are not touching, and can not touch after being wrapped.
3. You can cut the wire at the just above the bad spot and install a new plug on the shorter end. You may have to use an extension cord after doing that.
4. If you can get the part of the pump, where the wire goes into it apart, you can undo the wires from the pump and install a whole new cord and plug. (This may require some soldering).
Just remember one thing. Don't do ANY of this while the pump is plugged in.
Sorry, had to put that disclaimer in there.
