Progress The Safety Culture With Safety Signs
Safety signs are made to communicate expected behaviours, the locations of emergency facilities and material stores. This comprehensive system of signs numbers over some two thousand designs and covers every situation imaginable.
To manage this variety of directive tasks,health and safety signs communicates expected behaviour and the locations of emergency gear and dangerous materials.
So diverse is the variety that functional groups have been established. Commencing with the informational to the imperative, “failure to observe this sign is life threatening”, they play a crucial role in directing behaviours.
Easy recognition of each group has been assured by using graphics that are group specific. Every functional group is characterized by a banner unique in color and graphical style to that group.
If we were to look at the Notice Signs they are informal in content, not demanded by any legislated requirements and tend to reflect the needs of the company in guiding people’s behaviour. Certainly the organization want’s you to observe these signs but failure to do so poses no risk to life and limb – amongst the texts will be Notice signs, Security Notices and Be Careful.
In jumping from one sign group to another, there is clearly no right or wrong group classification. It all depends on the safety committee’s consensus on severity of the hazard.
Next in order of “listen to me” are the “Stop Signs”. These are designed to delineated actions that are not permitted. These signs outline what is expected of employees. Failure to observe these signs advisory content is not expected to contribute to personal injury or accident. This type of sign often is for behaviours expected as the result of legislation, and carries the force of law.
You can understand this most simply by the fact that common signs of this group include, No Smoking, No Thoroughfare, No Entry and so on. They often demand customization for the many unique situations that are around.
Knowing the strength of the message being communicated is the responsibility of everyone in a work place. The more life threatening the message content the greater the need for the employer to deliver appropriate training and for the employee to strictly follow the content of the sign – safe work is no accident.
