How would you rank level of guitar player?
It seems like a lot of people on Y!A will declare themselves as an intermediate player and then go on to state they've only been playing for 1 yr or 7 months or something to that effect. I have been playing for 8 years and reluctantly will refer to myself as an intermediate player. Its not that I can't play, or haven't accumulated any guitar skills during those years, but as a "intermediate" guitar play I know that there is much much more I need to learn and be able to execute. When I play for someone who doesn't play guitar, they will usually say that I am amazing at guitar, which i know is not true. The question i guess is then, how do you judge/rank a players abilities? ( i know it doesn't really matter, as the only reason most of us play is have fun but...)
Knowledge of scales? inventory of chords? ability to play in time? ability to create original music?
While I don't really think it matters what level people consider themselves to play at, I think it also varies from person to person how quickly they learn. I agree that a lot of people on Y!A tend to underestimate how long it takes to really learn to play guitar, but at the same time, it doesn't take a really long time to learn to read tabs and chord diagrams and be jamming along to you favorite tunes. A lot of people consider that to be a good guitarist and would say they're at an intermediate level. Personally, I would say I'm above intermediate but certainly not advanced or master level if those are the gradings you choose to use. I've been playing guitar since I was 7 years old (I'm 44 now). In those 37 years I have taken lessons for about 10 years and done a lot of self-teaching. I am a worship leader at my church, playing guitar and singing in front of over 200 people every Sunday. I'm currently studying from a few books (Jazz Chops for Guitar, Blues Chops for Guitar, and Pumping Nylon (classical)). I still don't consider myself an advanced guitarist because I know several people just locally who play far better than I do. So I guess it all depends on how you judge yourself and how critical you are of yourself. I don't think it matters really because, unless you are a professional musician, the key is to enjoy making music and continuing to grow and learn new things. Don't get caught up on grading yourself or comparing your skills with others or you'll drive yourself nuts and lose the joy of playing music.
